“Lone Star”

Just some quick hit thoughts about the show, since it’s been cancelled now…

  • I enjoy a lot of “Lone Star,” but I hate the music more than anything I like about it. It is so generic, network TV procedural, and it undermines a lot of good moments with good acting and good writing. This is where a soft piano would come in.
  • AND THIS IS WHERE THE MONTAGE OF LOOKING AROUND THE OFFICE COMES IN!!!! INTENSE!!!
  • This is certainly the most cable-y show I’ve seen on network television. The direction in the pilot was excellent (Marc Webb, aka Spiderman 4) and created a couple of good symbols for the show to work off of. (The second episode was a little more generic.) Not everything was spelled out with dialogue, although there were more clunky moments than I expected. Need a little bit of regular network shows, I guess.
  • At least twice reveals were shown with flashforward montages while Bob was speaking over them. Just say it or show it.
  • The pilot painted Bob as a conflicted man who tries to do the right thing. The second painted him much more as a Don Draper, leading on both sides of his life without much cause. I don’t really think this was on purpose.
  • I felt no sympathy for Bob. He needs to do what he wants. If what he wants is fuck around on both women, then fine. But he can’t work that way with a moral compass. (See: Donald Draper.)
  • This show was good, but not quite as good as all of the acclaim made it seem.
  • The thing that scares me is that it’s not people didn’t like the premise - they didn’t even turn up for the first episode. How will shows like this survive, then?
